Psoriasis is a common skin condition usually involving red, scaly, and/or itchy patches on the skin. While the exact cause of psoriasis is not known, the immune system is believed to be involved. In psoriasis, skin cells grow at a quicker rate than normal. These excess skin cells turn into the Psoriatic lesions.
While technichally there is no cure for psoriasis, many people are able to significantly and effectively control the frequency and severity of psoriasis outbreaks with Chinese Medicine. Treatment of psoriasis involves the use of both herbal teas and the application of herbal ointments topically to the skin. The benefit of treatment with Chinese Medicine is that the treatments do not thin the skin as some conventional treatments do. Treatment time varies as psoriasis presents in varying levels of severity from person to person.
Psoriasis lesions can occur anywhere in the body and there are various types of psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis is the most common form and the lesions are commonly found on the outsides of the elbows or knees. Scalp psoriasis is also common. Guttate psoriasis presents as tear or drop like lesions usually on the chest. Other forms of psoriasis include pustular psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, and erythrodermic psoriasis. In practice, one person can present with various types of psoriasis.
